Don't Legislate My Body With Your Religion

There is a old quote floating around the internet that goes, “Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one. It's fine to be proud of it. But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around,
And PLEASE don't try to shove it down my children's throats”. As vulgar this may be I often feel like religion is being shoved down my throat when my control of my body and life are attacked by the religious beliefs of others.

I am talking of course about abortion. I am not a fan of abortion and I don't believe that anyone is, it is not a desirable thing, but until we can have a means of contraception that is one hundred percent accurate, it is necessary to preserve women's place in the workforce and in society. In the not to distant past, women were turned down for jobs because the employer knew that they could become pregnant at anytime. Now when a women is asked if she is planning on having children in the next five years, she can answer “no” and know for certain.

Personally I think most religious are cancerous. Belief in gods has justified countless atrocities against mankind, from the Crusades to the enslavement of African Americans. I am not attacking any particular religion, but any that ask the follower to go forth and spread the cancer or fosters feeling of superiority in believers is unhealthy. I don't believe in any higher power. I do what I believe is the right thing based upon my own ethical code which I have thought critically on for most of my life. Most religions save people the trouble of having to think deeply about what is right by providing a handy list of rules to follow. I have no road map but that allows me to be progressive and passionate for I am not tied to old and often bigoted traditions.

I know the pro-life side's stick. Thou shall not kill. That is a good argument for people under the Christian doctrine but I have my own ethical doctrine: Thou shall not bring a child into the world and fuck it up as bad as your parents did to you. So far it is working pretty well for me. When and if I have a child it will be my decision to make not my mistake. That is my choice so keep your saints and prophets out of it.

  1. "I am talking of course about abortion." Darn, I thought you were talking about Intellegent Design. Or selling alchohol on Sundays. Or tax exemptions for churches. Or...

"Now when a women is asked if she is planning on having children in the next five years, she can answer “no”"

Actually, they can point out that it is illegal for an employer to ask that during an interview.

  2. I saw a great billboard during the leadup to the first Gulf War. It said,

What part of "Thou Shalt Not Kill" do you not understand?
