The title line happens to be from one of my favorite time wasting websites: Married to the Sea, who recently produced a youtube video entitle “Fuck You If You Don't Like Christmas”. This is a hilarious way to get into the spirit of the season yet it brings me to a serious point: shut up about how you don't like Christmas. I can completely understand how people can complain that Christmas is like most other holidays and completely driven by consumerism. Perhaps it is for some people, yet for me it is much more. Christmas it a time to let your childishness run free. It is a time where it is socially acceptable for adults to dress in funny clothing, to drink and eat too much, and to give gifts to loved ones. To me that sounds like a wonderful holiday! What a perfect excuse for you to allow your childhood wonder to run free and to see things as beautiful and wondrous again instead of calculated and boring.
This is also a season that encourages people to remember those in need in their community. Toys for Tots and holiday food drives are collecting in every town. When we go to the store to make the dinner that our family and ourselves will overindulge, we see the Salvation Army ringing their little bells and we give because we are happy and joyous. What is wrong with this? We only have this one precious life to live and I want to live joyously. I want to decorate pine trees inside of my house for no other reason than because it is beautiful. I want to have a day off of work so that I can do nothing more than eat cookies and spend the day with my loving family and I don't want to hear your criticism for it! So if you believe that you are rising above consumerism by being a Grinch this Christmas, I implore you to lighten up and enjoy the season as flawed and greed driven as it may be simply because it is fun and enjoyment is the justification for this life.
