The Reality of Reality TV

After a long day at work, I opted to sit in my living room, enjoy the company of my roommates , and unwind with some evening television. In a situation like this, the remote usually get tossed around between the four of us for a minute of two, because no one wants to take the initiative to find something to suit us all. On this particular evening, one roommate decided to indulge in her guilty pleasure of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”, and surprisingly no one objected. I should say unfortunately no one objected. We sat through an episode, and watched the daily lives of these glamorous three young ladies unfold for 30 minutes. Luckily it was a little less than that, because we were blessed with commercial breaks.

Despite the popularity of the show, I had never actually watched an episode before. And going in to that half hour, I knew I was most likely going to be disgusted, which I was, but I was also just saddened. Reality TV is getting out of control. This show is a prime example of why it is out of control. These girls were already filthy rich, for being completely talentless and famous, and now they have become even MORE rich because of Reality TV!

The Kardashian’s are apart of only a small handful of reality TV show subjects, and I am more shocked about the number of ordinary, talentless people that are becoming millionaires off reality TV shows. Practically anybody can become a face on TV now and generate instant fame from their stint on reality TV shows. Although it may even be 15 minutes of fame or shorter, reality TV is creating an opportunity for boring, stupid people to become celebrities. Although the term “celebrity” does not necessarily require a person to have actual talent, there are just too many people out there getting rich off a poor excuse for entertainment.

Reality TV was a new and exciting trend at one point in time, but it has worn out its welcome. The fact that it has it has got to the point where incredibly rich, talentless celebrities (e.g. The Kardashians) are becoming more incredibly rich by getting a TV show dedicated to their superficial and materialistic lives is just asinine. This sort of entertainment is going to brainwash the youth of our county and if they continue to grow up on shows like this, who knows what their generation could yield.

  1. While I have unfortunately not had the pleasure of ever seeing Keeping Up With The Kardashians, I have experienced the treat that is Jersey Shore. Clearly talent is not required to become famous because I think it's safe to say the people on these shows do close to nothing and get paid very well. Unfortunately I think this is just because it's a lot easier to watch a television show you don't need to pay attention to. That way you can watch whenever you want and still be "entertained" by it. I think a lot of people watch shows like this so they can make fun of them. But little do they know that is actually contributing to their fame and success. The more people that know them, the more they are going to get paid. What's unfortunate to me is that they are all set for life, while the rest of us will probably end up in difficult jobs and not make as much in a year as they do in a month. Props to them for beating the system, but I still think they should consider themselves very lucky and appreciate what they have every day.
