Hypocritical Littering

Littering seems to be widely accepted as bad. So many people criticize others for littering. There is no doubt in my mind that an end to littering would be a fantastic idea. According to greenecoservices.com, 75% of Americans admit to littering. This information does not even take into account those who say that they do not, but really do. I myself must admit that I do litter now and then. I sometimes have the attitude that most people seem to have. This is that attitude that “One person never made a difference.” The part that annoys me the most about this topic however is the people that litter and tell others not to.

I have seen many of my friends litter minutes away from telling someone else not to. I seem to find this action more prevalent in females. They all seem to hate littering but, “One soda can doesn’t matter.” My girlfriend has giving me a littering scolding in the same car ride as she herself littered. I have one male friend I have seen do this also. I think this attitude is just a drastic version of the attitude I seem to have. I know littering is bad but, whatever it’s a cigarette, or a water bottle, or a McDonald’s bag full of trash. This also seems to be the attitude of the general populace. There needs to be a way to get everyone to change, but I don’t know what it could be. Global warming obviously isn’t scary enough yet. Also, the expensive fines seem to hardly be a deterrent. I am going to try to make it my New Year’s resolution to stop littering. I hope that others like me will see the error in their ways. They probably already do, so I hope rather that they actually stop littering instead of just trying to change others.

  1. Littering as a New Years resolution appears to be a good thing, but why not make a change in changing others attitude towards littering. Starting a club that reduces trash could produce a better outcome. I don't agree with the gender pointing, as it appears to be an issue with both genders, and different ages. I tend to pick up trash, due to the fact that it lowers the appearance of a location. If you change your behavior, others will see and may follow your example. Good Luck!
