bad influence

Recently, TMZ reported a news story with a video of Miley Cyrus doing salvia. It found a way onto YouTube and has now become an Internet sensation.

First of all, for those of you who have never heard of it, salvia is a legal drug in most of the united States that is smoked much like marijuana is, having similar effects to marijuana, with a psychedelic effect like LSD also. While it is debated as to whether this drug is good or bad, and should or should not be legal, one thing is blatantly clear: influential teen stars should not be using it in any way that could promote it to their fans.

It may be legal and it may be safe, but the effect it has on a person is far to similar to the dangerous, illegal drugs we have now. A teen star tweaking out on anything, whether it is as bad as marijuana or LSD, or seemingly as legal and harmless as salvia and cough medicine is reported to be is not okay. This gives kids the impression that things that distort your mind and get you "high" are cool. And that could be dangerous for them if they start to use real drugs because they saw Miley Cyrus do it.

This is not all hypothetical. I have seen firsthand what people on Salvia act like, and it seems far worse than illegal drugs like marijuana. Last week was when I first saw the news reports and YouTube videos of Miley Cyrus smoking salvia. Yesterday, I saw my friend's little brother's facebook status that said "I really wanna try salvia it seems like such a good time, even Miley's doin it! who wants in?" I am not exaggerating. This video needs to be taken down and something has to be done about teen stars influencing their young fans and audiences badly.

  1. The internet is the best and worst thing! Although I personally cannot stand Miley Cyrus, her career will inevitably be impacted by this, and I think it's a bit of a shame. The girl is young and should be able to experience what everyone else her age is experiencing without it being broadcasted across the globe, literally. Famous people cannot get away with anything... when will the begin to realize this? Miley is such a huge celebrity though, and she really should have known better than to have her record that video. Or let her "friend" record that video.

  2. As much as I dislike Miley Cyrus and her music, I acknowledge the fact that she influences millions of young people around the world. She also needs to realize this fact. I'm sure she thinks she is a regular person who should be able to participate in regular activities, but she is not a truly regular person. Everything she does will eventually get out into the public eye. I wish she thought a little more about the decisions she makes because they will impact her younger fans.
