There is a new show on WE TV it is called, ‘Downsized’, which follows an Arizona family struggling to make ends meet from the financial recession. Reality television series mimic the same roles, people arguing and complaining about how their life struggles. So does this show demonstrate the same view? Not exactly, because the main focus is to demonstrate how to make sacrifices, in order to survive as a family. The reality of the show is that this family enjoyed living a comfortable life, and now they are getting a rude awakening of what it means to be financially stable.
As an audience seeing the kids complain about giving up sports, was very disturbing, due to the fact that the parents cannot afford rent. By the end of the episode the children appeared to have an epiphany and they agreed to quit the expensive sports. The reality of the show is demonstrated by the appearance one needs to demonstrate among others. Today’s society is about what you have, and living beyond one’s means. A question to ask is would this family be struggling as much if they lived on a budget? Maybe, but a lot of families live as a means of keeping up with the Joneses. The family would not be in such a deep financial hole, if the father’s construction business survived.
Living on a budget does not mean making huge sacrifices; it develops good budgeting skills, which may reduce struggles in tough economic times. I think the show is trying to demonstrate that people are always in charge of their economic situations. In times of stress and financial struggles one needs to maintain a positive outlook and hopeful for the best. The sad reality people are facing is unemployment or bankruptcy; “Downsized” demonstrates many families can make difficult sacrifices in hopes for a better future.
