It's Christmas Time...

The holidays come around this time every year and everyone believes they must be “politically correct”. No one wants to offend anyone by saying Merry Christmas. I received an email just the other day from a FSU staff member which read; please join us for the lighting of the Holiday Tree. Another example is, I used to work as a cashier and we were told to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. As Christmas grew near I would start saying, hope you have a nice Christmas and the majority of people seemed to have enjoyed that I was actually saying Merry Christmas rather than Happy Holidays.

I understand that not everyone celebrates Christmas; however, the majority of the population does celebrate Christmas. Christmas is a huge holiday all over the world and Christmas drives corporations and manufacturing sales up all over the world.

I understand that people who celebrate Hanukkah and Kwanzaa may get their holiday over looked because of the Christmas enthusiasm. This doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t be allowed to say Merry Christmas or be looked at as if I am culturally inept.

I celebrate Christmas, I will say Merry Christmas, and if someone doesn’t like it tough shit.

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year…

  1. Congratulations. Your post perfectly expresses the sense of entitlement that belonging to the dominant culture brings, as well as the ignorance of how oppressive it is. On behalf of non-Christians, homosexuals, women, people with disabilities, and racial minorities -- I thank you.
