Last week, a story made headlines across America. An 18-year old Somali-American named Mohamed Osman Mohamud had been arrested in a bombing plot. The teenager had intended to detonate a bomb at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, Oregon. Thousands of deaths were averted by the quick actions of the police.
At first glance, the incident seems clear-cut, black and white. A terrorist, bent on efficiently taking as many lives as possible, came up with a plot to do just that. Authorities stopped him Unfortunately, the actual story is stranger.
It turns out that the FBI were heavily involved before Mohamud even got to the square where the ceremony was taking place. Actually, they might have been involved before he even had the idea to kill American citizens. The truth is, the FBI trained him, gave him a van full of fake explosives and persuaded him to carry out the attack.
You could argue that he could have walked away at any time. You could say Mohamud must have already harbored radical ideologies and he would have done something like this eventually. You would be wrong. Had the FBI not launched their sting operation and pressured him into doing what he did, there's no way to know if he might have eventually cracked. Essentially, he was tricked, coerced into something he might not otherwise do.
But I need to make it clear where I stand. There's a word for the person who could look at a crowd of families and other revelers enjoying the holiday festivities, then push a detonator. That word is “monster.” But I firmly believe that monsters are made, not born. Is it possible the FBI made Mohamed Osman Mohamud into the kind of monster he is now?
I had actually not heard this side of the story until I read this post. I agree with the idea presented in this post, as well as a few more online articles. The FBI seem to be the only ones with a true plausible motive here. They want to prove that they are doing something about terrorism. There are no documents of Mohamud’s supposed quotes, saying that he would rather detonate a bomb and that the US should feel what they are doing abroad. There were also lies in the case about family issues. The kid did have radical ideas, and this fact cannot be denied. The FBI did however put the detonator in his hands. How do we even expect him to get these explosives without help? The FBI seems to be able to do whatever it wants without accountability. How could they miss one of the most complex plots imaginable in 9/11, and catch this kid with a very simple idea. If you are interested in conspiracies I suggest you take a look at my post about 9/11. There are some interesting points as well as a link to much more. It’s healthy to question those in control.
ReplyDeleteThe Onion-style headline for this story should have been, "FBI uncovers own plot to bomb treelighting!"
ReplyDeleteWhile I wouldnt go as far as to say that all monsters are made, not born, I do agree with you that the FBI, the government, and a lot of other powers in our society have high influence on almost everyone. All the government or a corporation have to do is put an inkling of an idea or notion into the media and suddenly it is all the rage. We might not even know if it is truth or completely made up. For example, the alert scale for terrorism that was made after 9/11. Whenever we were moved up a level on the alert system people panicked. How do we know if the government had a reason for moving it up or down. I think all of these issues have to do with the fact that we as a public are at the merciless hands of larger things, like government and corporations and there's not much we can do about it.
