To Be or Not to Be Legal…

Being from a so called “Blue State” this doesn’t seem to be really a hot topic, but being a conservative I find it rather important. Illegal immigrants coming to the United States illegally is completely absurd, and the fact that legal residents accept the fact that they are here and keep coming here and this doesn’t bother them is even more absurd. According to CBS News, the illegal immigrant population was at 10.8 million. These illegal aliens are coming to the United States, taking many jobs away from people who are here legal and getting many of the benefits citizens of the U.S. are getting. They are not paying taxes, sending their child or children to public schools which you and I are paying for. For example, according to http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/immigrationnaturalizatio/a/caillegals.htm the state of California spends nearly $7.7 billion a year for school children of illegal aliens. Then they spend another $1.4 billion of tax payer’s money on health care for them which in they shouldn’t be getting either. Yet, if a citizen who does have health insurance goes to the emergency room they have to wait for 4 hours before they even get seen because it is overflowing with illegal’s because hospitals can’t refuse anyone…maybe that’s the reason hospitals and health insurance are so expensive and a Tylenol costs $7.00 for one pill.

When I have a discussion with someone in regards to this the majority of the time I am told that is how it works and your grandparents were in the same boat. Well my grandparents and I’m sure many other grandparents were not in the same boat. Mine along with many other elderly people I know personally came over from Italy, Ireland and other countries the correct way. They left most of their family and came over one at a time, all waiting for the correct paperwork and for the United States government to accept them. When they became citizens they then worked, paid taxes and social security. They learned the language and if they didn’t know how to pronounce something they asked for help. Never once did they expect the already English speaking citizens to learn Italian.

More people need to realize how important illegal immigration is and how much money it is costing you and me.

  1. While you make a very good point in regards to illegal immigrants reaping the benefits of America that would have otherwise gone to Americans, I have to wonder if these persons are any less deserving of these benefits merely because they have not done the paperwork and jumped through all the many hoops to become a citizen. What would you say to someone, for example, who is working in the United States, is a citizen of another country which would not allow for dual citizenship, and has left their family behind in their own country as they could not afford to transport them all over here? I would suggest that many illegal immigrants are supporting family in their home country and have come to the United States to make money that they have no chance of making in their own country. If the United States really wanted to eliminate this potential economic drain, as these persons are not paying taxes, we could send more foreign aid to these countries, such as Mexico, Brazil, and many others. Either way, these people need financial assistance because of their struggling economies, and it is not their fault that they were born into a country that has a lower economic standard of living.

  2. Citing a six year old web article, as well as a number of other refuted statistics, isn't going to win you many arguments. Likewise, you're statement, "These illegal aliens are coming to the United States, taking many jobs away from people who are here legal (sic)", is unsupported.

  3. I agree with Anon. Are you suggesting that we let people die in the street? Sick people belong in emergency rooms. Where else should children be except for schools? These people could be paying taxes but the conservative party seems to be unwilling to accept that these people are here and grant them amnesty so that they can start to pay their way like the rest of this nation. This is not a perfect solution but it would be more expensive and rather dehumanizing to round up all illegal aliens and deport them. I hear a lot of people from both sides that are outraged about this issue but until we are able to come to a plausible solution to these problems then the problem will persist and likely get worse. I think it is important to remember that these are human beginnings that we are speaking of and they must be treated as so.
