The label alone on Magic Hat's fall seasonal beer, Hex, speaks volumes by giving a very creepy vibe, and over bearing sense that this is a beer with intense flavor. With its unique, eye catching label, the beer begs you to dare to try a sip. The label is decorated in a monochromatic red theme with an image of some goulish figures drinking around a table. With these bold characteristics, I was sold through the glass refrigerator door at the liquor store, and could only hope that the first sip would live up to its expectations...
And it certainly did! It was unlike any fall beer I have tasted before. Although the taste was full of rich flavors, it was not packed with any artificial spices or blends that often get tangled up in a beer companies attempts to recreate the essence of the fall season in a bottle of beer. The beer is a German Ale, and is not heavy like a brown ale or bitter like Magic Hat's well known IPA's. In comparison to most fall seasonal beers out there, Hex certainly brings a lot to the table. Its competition consists of Shipyard Pumpkinhead, which is jam packed with spices, herb, and pumpkin flavor. The overwhelming flavors in Pumpkinhead make for a refreshing treat, but it is just too much flaor to have more than one of these in a sitting.
After my first sip, I was pleased with my willingness to give in to the creepy appeal of the Magic Hat Hex. If you are looking for a fall seasonal that is a little out of the ordinary, but a good companion to the brisk, changing autumn season, this might just be the beer you are looking for this fall.
Your opening makes a big deal about how impressive the label is. How hard would it have been to include a picture? http://www.google.com/images?q=magic+hat+hex is your friend.
