Police Chief At Age 20

Reading the news recently, I was shocked to read a story about the twenty-year-old female college student who has stepped up to the plate to become the police chief of Guadalupe Distrito Bravo, Mexico. Marisol Valles Garcia took the role upon herself when no one else in her town wanted to. The town is very violent, and with the major was just murdered in July.

I cannot imagine how such a young person could desire to take this task upon themselves, but I give her so much credit. Despite the dedication and effort it will take to be police chief of this corrupt town, there is also a major danger risk involved. She is young and inexperienced, but her determination is astounding. If the town were not so violent and crime-stricken, I would still be amazed at the task she has taken upon herself. It makes me think of how many opportunities are presented to me in life, and I simply do not take them because I am scared to, or I view them as impossible. Her story is a real eye-opener to the fact that you truly can do anything you set your mind to.

I can recall back in freshman year of college when a friend of mine really wanted me to be the treasurer of her club. I weighed the pros and cons of the offer, took in to account that I am already busy with school and working, and was not sure if I would be able to handle the responsibility. The responsibility was basically to count money, and organize only two or three fund raisers. I refused the offer, let my friend down, and made up every reason not to help her at the time. When I look back now, I regret this. In comparison to so many things she could have asked me to do, the role of treasurer was nothing strenuous.

Marison Valles Garcia is a pretty amazing young girl that deserves praise from her town, as well as her country. She also deserves credit from people all over the world doing something that most would not dream of. I wish her luck on the job, and I hope she gets the credit she deserves. She could and should be viewed as real role model for young girls across the world for her courageous efforts.

  1. This is really inspiring, I wish Chief Garcia the best of luck at her new post. The town sounds like a hellhole, maybe a young perspective is needed to clean things up. If anything, she won't be as easy to bribe as someone who's older and more set in their ways. She'll need to be tough, though. People will try to push her to see what they can get away with. In her situation, giving ground will probably have fatal consequences.

  2. Now that you've reached a personal epiphany, have you now volunteered your time and energy in some other service organization?
