Before entering Framingham State, I was instructed at orientation to have a laptop. As most first year students hear, the school highly encourages to buy the Framingham State sponsored Dell laptop. It is mentioned few times before coming to campus that the campus does not support Mac computers. Personally, out of fear I instructed my parents (who I was fortunate to have purchase my laptop) to buy the school laptop. I felt that if I was to have a problem having someone on campus to fix it would be easiest. Once the laptop finally arrived it seemed to be “the basic laptop”. It came with WiFi connections, web cam and a CD drive. It was all I needed for school. Considering it was what the school recommended I figured I would be all set.
The first day I moved onto campus I was unable to get an internet connection, while my roommate who had another computer was able to log on perfectly fine. The Dell PC got 4 viruses in a matter of a month and I was constantly faced with having to use the “blue cable” to get an internet connection. I was very surprised to see that my roommate had a different computer than I, seeing the school suggested the Dell I though more people would have bought them. It turns out that many people bought outside of what Framingham State had suggested. A few of my close friends have Mac computers and find that they work just fine, never having connection problems and typically being able to have the internet in places where my Dell is incapable.
I would like to know why FSU can’t support Mac computers when people on campus who have Mac laptops receive nothing short of excellent internet connections and are able to function just fine in classes with the different operating system. I wish Framingham State would not frown upon having a Mac computer on campus because they prove to be nothing different if not better than the Dell PC that the school suggests students use.
I agree - I hate my Dell. However, FSU has a contract with Dell and other schools have contracts with companies too. They go to bid and find a company with the best rate - Dell was it at the time and they keep that contract for a specific number of years. After working with Macs, I'll never buy another Dell and getting it fixed has been nothing buy a problem. It's been reimaged 2-3 times, which is pretty much every time I get a virus and unless your laptop is gone for a total of 24 hours they won't give you a loaner. I wish I had known 4 years ago how horrible Dells are.
