Has the noise of a neighbor doing housework, mowing their lawn or leaf blowing ever woken you up? Often times in the warmer months my neighborhood is full of delightful neighbors doing yard work and building things such as sheds or working on manicuring their houses. I take great appreciation for living in a nice neighborhood, however, often times I can loose sleep due to persisting neighbors and their weekend chores. Many neighbors are up mowing away at hours as early as 6 a.m. especially during the summer. I realize that people may want to mow their lawns before the weather gets unbearable however they continue to compromise the sleep of others around them.
In my town, disrupting the peace does not have a “time frame”, there is word of mouth that any time after 10 p.m. making loud noises or obscene actions can be considered disrupting the peace and lead to a visit from local police or even a fine. I think that the town should enforce a morning time in which would allow for the same bylaws to be followed. I understand that people may want to beat the heat, or want to get their leaf blowing out of the way of their Saturday chores; but 6 a.m. on a weekend is not the time to do so. Many people in my town would agree that even 8 a.m. would be a reasonable time to begin doing such chores.
Seeing as disrupting the peace is a legitimate offense I don’t understand why people do not take into consideration the time they are mowing their lawns much like people who have parties or BBQ in their backyard are quiet after 10 p.m. I feel as if the town’s law enforcement should be involved in creating a bylaw stating at which times disruption and noises will be “strictly enforced”.
What a great idea! Why don't you go find out what is involved with your getting a bylaw or ordinance passed. It probably involves drafting the text, collecting signatures, and getting it added to the agenda of the next town meeting.
