Since as far back as I can remember, all I have ever heard about Communications Majors is negative things. They’re so lazy. They’re so unproductive. Their classes are so easy. Their lives aren’t stressful. The comments never end. As a Communications major myself, I have learned to put up with the abuse over time. People refuse to see a Communications major as something more than someone who’s obsessed with movies. Yeah, that’s it. They hit the nail on the head. We love movies. We want to watch movies for a living. People don’t understand, nor will they probably ever, and I have done my best to make peace with that.
Friends of mine constantly accuse me of never doing work. This is mainly because I don’t do homework with other people. Even if I was majoring in quantum physics, I wouldn’t do my homework with other people. But because I am a Communications major, it is assumed that I have no work to do, and am instead watching a movie. The work of a Communications major is continuously referred to as easy. That’s all well and good I suppose, we all have our opinions, but regardless of yours, it is still work.
I really enjoy the phrase “wow, wish I was a Communications major, then maybe my life wouldn’t be so stressful!” Really? Then change your major and shut up. Instead of thinking about it, just do it. Because none of us want to listen to you complain about it. However, it is my philosophy that you have to be creative to be a Communications major. And sorry, but some of you just wouldn’t cut it. Sure, maybe you’ll grasp the vocabulary better, but that won’t help you when it comes to creative thinking. You’ll probably fall very quickly. And I’ll probably laugh. Actually, I’ll definitely laugh.
People enjoy telling me that I wouldn’t last in another major. I think they’re wrong. I think I could succeed in any major (with the exception of any sciences) with flying colors. I could have been a fine English major. I could have done well with Business. Hell, I was pretty decent at Spanish in high school, I probably could have made it as a Spanish major. Soy intelligente. But I chose Communications.
I knew that I wanted Communications long before the college hunt began. You could make the argument that I wanted to be a Communications major when I was 5. When I was a little kid, my beanie babies had ongoing storylines. They were not simply stuffed animals, they were characters. Weird? Yes. Creative? Absolutely. I excel at creative writing. Sure, I’m not going to cure cancer. And maybe I won’t ever head a multi-billion dollar company. But I’ll be satisfied. I’ll be doing what I want to do. How many people on Wall Street are passionate about what they do? I’m banking on not too many. That’s not the life for me. I know what I want. And I can get there.
I suppose Communications majors will suffer abuse until the end of time. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the sad truth. I just wish people could understand that we’re all in college. We’re all pursuing what we want to do. Why can’t that be enough? We all have to go to class. We all have to do our homework. And guess what, we’re all going to graduate (some sooner than others). So whether or not you believed I worked as hard as you, I’m still going to have a degree as well. And I’m not going to sympathize with you if you hate your job. You chose to be a Geology major. So go inspect those stalactites. I’m sure you’ll have a blast. Maybe you should have thought about what your life would be like after college and all the stressful work. Maybe you should have been a Communications major. No worries, you’ll have plenty of time to think about that after the cave collapses while you’re in it. Maybe if you’re lucky, I’ll write a script about it.
I actually started out as a communications major, im now an English major but I held on to communications as a minor. I did really well in the communications classes, found them easy actually. Just because they may be easy does not mean that I didn't enjoy it, some of my favorite classes were in communications.I think the reason why people are so negative toward it is because they are envious of communication majors- they have enjoyable classes overall.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you can't sell that script you write, and you're lucky, I'll be hearing you say, "You want fries with that?"
