Once you get your license you can drive as long as you want unless of course you get in to trouble with the law. Should elderly people be driving without having to be retested through the registry of motor vehicles once they reach a certain age? Have you ever been driving and you see an elderly person go right thru a stop sign or it a red light and they slow down but continue to go thru it? I have been very close to getting hit by them on more than one occasion. Driving with my grandparents from when I was a little kid to today, I have noticed a huge difference in their driving. They can’t see as good anymore and their reflexes aren’t as quick as they used to be. According to the Boston Globe there were four car accidents in the last month involving elderly drivers that could have easily been avoided. Also reported in the Boston Globe, a 92 year old man backed over and killed his wife at a West Dennis Yacht Club and another 89 year old hit and killed a 4-year old in a cross walk. I believe these could have been avoided. A younger person could have seen the four year old child in the crosswalk and stopped. Maybe her vision isn’t as good anymore and if she wouldn’t be able to pass the eye exam that new drivers need to pass she shouldn’t be driving anymore. The guy who backed over his wife could have been avoided as well. Maybe he would have seen her if he could see better, or maybe if his reflexes were quicker he would have stopped before he hit her.
I believe something needs to be done, but I am not saying that they shouldn’t be able to drive at all. I just believe they should go through an eye exam and a shortened road test at a certain age, maybe 65 years old. Many elderly people including my grandparents would probably disagree with me, but it is for the safety of them and the other people along the road.
Gosh, I wonder what state agency is responsible for giving out driving licenses. And I wonder which branch of state government is responsible for regulating the requirements to hold those licenses. Oh well, I guess I'll just keep wondering. Maybe someone else will solve the problem for me.
